“Cross Current” by Alison Brush

2026 Spring Members Exhibition

Judge: Karen Israel

First Prize: Stepping Out, by Javier Eastman “I was immediately drawn to this narrative which spoke to me of sadness. The figure seems to need a hug. It made me wonder what happened to this person, what is her story? The background is pleasing and supports the figure’s mood. The subtle shifts of value and color temperature also support the figure and add to the sense of loneliness”. KI

Second Prize: Skyfall, by Steffen Cretella. “This abstract gave me the feeling of looking down upon the earth from above. On closer examination I noticed the wonderful transitions of hues in the blues. The division of shapes created by the lines made this work interesting without stopping the eye from exploring further.” KI

Third Prize: Rolling In, by Robert Dietz.”I enjoyed the dramatic sense of early morning silvery light in this seascape. There is an interesting use of edges that adds to the illusion of moving water. The artists’ use of whites, warm and cool, add to this dramatic seascape..”KI

Honorable Mention: Late Summer Grasses, by Deb Greco. “This artist created a peaceful, gentle, windy atmosphere with her use of soft edges and subtle color palette. The textures in the foreground add to the interest. Overall, there is an illusion of depth created by the aerial perspective.”KI

Honorable Mention: Fattoria San Donato, by Ellen Gregory. “This work spoke to me because of the grey and light palette helping it to feel like an overcast day. The artists use of brushwork and impasto made this painting fun to explore. There are many details in this work, but they are not overpowering the painting.”KI

Honorable Mention: Camden, Maine, by Lorna McLaughlin. “What drew me to this landscape painting was the rich color and variety of hues in the dark shadows. It has a solid design with the darks creating a platform for the lights, which helped to create a wonderful atmosphere.”KI

Honorable Mention: A Gesture of Love, by Barbara Alex. “The artist created a sense of circular movement in this still life. I enjoyed the variety of textures and interesting use of color.” KI

Artist Statement

I am naturally highly expressive. If you could assign an art analogy to my
personality it would probably be “colorful.” What makes my artist heart “sing” is
that feeling of taking something which is already beautiful to me and using
expressive color and value to highlight the things that most strike me in the subject
hoping that you will feel it also.
Pastels are the perfect medium for me. They are pure, glorious pigment with very
little binder to hold them in their shape and can be miraculously layered one on
top of the other for a translucent effect that doesn’t rob them of their individuality. I
hope my art gives you as much joy as I experienced in creating it. – Lorna
